Gandhi Ashram Sabarmati
Gandhi ji selected a place on the bank of the river Sabarmati very close to the Saint Dadheechi’s temple as well as from jail and a crematorium, for setting-up his Ashram. The activities of the Ashram commenced in 1917 and Gandhi ji had undertaken all the major activities of independence as well as society upliftment from this Ashram, which was popularly known as Sabarmati Ashram. He stayed in this Ashram for many years before he finally proceeded for a march to Dandi to break the salt law on 12th March 1930. The Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya is a museum run by a public trust established in 1951. The museum’s main objective is to house the personal memorabilia of Mahatma Gandhi. Consequently, the exhibits on display depict the vivid and historic events of Gandhiji’s life. There are books, manuscripts and photocopies of his correspondence, photographs of Gandhiji with his wife Kasturba and other ashram associates, life size oil paintings and actual relics like his writing desk and spinning wheel.
Gujarat Vidyapith
Gujarat Vidyapith was founded by Mahatma Gandhi on 18th October, 1920 and he remained its life-long Kulpati (Chancellor). Gujarat Vidyapith is a deemed university since 1963 and is funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for higher education programs. Gujarat Vidyapith imparts higher education with an integrated system of education, teaching from the nursery to doctorate level. The main objective is to prepare workers of character, ability, culture and dedication for the conduct of movements connected with the regeneration of country in accordance with the ideals given by Mahatma Gandhi. Accordingly, the education system of Vidyapith includes regular participation in community work, residential life, social service, community prayers, simple and self-reliant living, study tours and field studies, hand spinning and training in craft work. The education here has been linked with the national needs of rural upliftment and to promote education, conducive to the grass-root levels of the society.
Gandhi Research Foundation
Gandhi Research Foundation is the initiator and promoter of ‘Gandhi Teerth’, an international centre for Gandhian study, research and dialogue. Its core objective is to preserve and promote the Gandhian ideology and legacy. Gandhi Teerth is a magnificent 65,000 sft sustainable structure amidst 300 acres of lush, afforested hilly terrain, and is located at Jain Hills, Jalgaon, Maharashtra, India. ‘Khoj Gandhiji Ki’ is a thematic, state-of-art, interactive multimedia museum, conceived and commissioned to disseminate Gandhiji’s life-lessons and ideology, as also the saga of Indian independence movement. GRF has so far collected from authentic sources 7,350 books, 4,090 periodicals (Harijan, Navjeevan, Young India etc.), 4,019 photographs, 75 films, 148 audio recordings of Gandhiji’s speeches, and philately items from 114 countries. The initiative is sponsored by Jain Irrigation Systems Limited and Bhavarlal and Kantabai Jain Multipurpose Foundation, an in-house charity.
